Our assessments are designed to be comfortable, conversational, collaborative, and thorough, with the goal of developing a meaningful understanding of your experiences.
The Autism assessment process typically includes:
Pre-assessment questionnaires and history forms to help you share your experiences and provide important background information before your appointment.
A comprehensive diagnostic interview (approximately 2-3 hours) completed via secure video call. Minds Matter uses the MIGDAS-2, a strengths-based, conversational assessment approach that explores your experiences, your way of thinking, and how you navigate the world. You are welcome to take breaks whenever you need.
Preliminary verbal feedback at the end of your appointment. Where possible, your assessor will share their initial clinical impressions, including whether the available information suggests you are likely to meet the diagnostic criteria. Sometimes this is clear on the day, while other times additional time is needed to carefully consider all of the information gathered. Regardless, we believe you shouldn't have to wait until your report is completed to have an understanding of how your assessment is progressing.
Optional input from someone who knows you well (e.g., family member, partner, close long-term friend) where possible, can provide valuable additional information. We use structured questionnaires that are sent to you to forward to a person of your choosing.
We recognise that not everyone has someone who is able, appropriate, or safe to involve, and this will never prevent you from accessing an assessment or diagnosis. This is in line with the National Guideline for the assessment and diagnosis of Autism in Australia.
Careful review and diagnostic formulation, with all information considered against the current DSM-5-TR criteria for Autism, alongside other factors that may contribute to your experiences.
A comprehensive report (or confirmation letter, depending on your chosen option), typically emailed within 3-4 weeks of your assessment.

NDIS Access Package
$600 (added to a comprehensive report)
The NDIS considers evidence of how your disability affects your everyday functioning, not just whether you have a diagnosis. To provide the documentation commonly required for an access request, Minds Matter offers an optional NDIS Access Package designed for those that are applying for, considering, or already receiving NDIS (or other government/private) supports.
This package includes:
Additional NDIS-preferred functional assessment measures (formal evidence of how your disability affects your everyday functioning, needed for NDIS application)
An additional Funding Justification document (2-3 pages). This document is designed to complement your assessment report by clearly summarising the evidence most relevant to an NDIS access request, clearly outlining functional impacts, support needs, and how your disability affects your everyday life, in line with the NDIS access criteria.
Completion of the treating clinician section of your NDIS Access Request Form, where appropriate.
You can decide whether to add this package at any time during the assessment process. However, if it is requested after your comprehensive report has been finalised and sent, additional fees may apply.

Minds Matter uses a conversational assessment approach based on the DIVA-5 (Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults) a structured, conversational interview that explores your experiences of attention, focus, activity levels, and impulsivity, and how these have shown up across your life, from childhood through to the present. You are welcome to take breaks whenever you need.

Our combined Autism and ADHD assessment follows the same thorough, collaborative process outlined in our Autism and ADHD assessments (please see details in the individual Autism and ADHD assessment menu items above), brought together into one streamlined process, so you do not have to complete two separate assessments.
In brief, this means:
One comprehensive diagnostic interview (approximately 3 hours) that draws on both the MIGDAS-2 (for Autism) and the DIVA-5 (for ADHD), completed via secure video call, with breaks whenever you need.
The same pre-assessment questionnaires and history forms, optional informant input, and preliminary verbal feedback at the end of your appointment.
All information carefully considered against the current DSM-5-TR criteria for both Autism and ADHD.

We keep our pricing straightforward and easy to understand.Each assessment type and its associated fee reflects the report length, detail, and additional work involved. A thorough assessment can involve 10 or more hours of professional time, much of which happens behind the scenes. Like an iceberg, the face-to-face sessions are just the visible part, while careful analysis, scoring, report writing, and recommendations make up the substantial hidden portion. We understand that assessment costs can feel high, and we do our best to keep our fees as low and accessible as possible, but government support for adult Autism and ADHD assessments is limited, and Medicare does not subsidise these comprehensive assessments. Our fees reflect the time, expertise, and detailed reporting involved, while ensuring you receive a high-quality, neuroaffirming assessment.
Additional assessment time, and fees associated with administrative tasks beyond those included in your booked assessment type, are charged at a rate of $280/hour. This is below the 2026-2027 AAPi recommended fee of $340 for a standard consultation (see the AAPi recommended fees). All fees are inclusive of GST where applicable.
Please note: the fees listed are based on a standard assessment. If your assessment is found to be particularly complex, or more time is needed, fees may be higher. We do our best to identify whether this is likely for you ahead of time, however, depending on the information received before your assessment, sometimes this is not known until the assessment has commenced. Your assessing clinician will discuss any change to the usual structure with you as soon as it becomes apparent.

This is your assessment, and your time. It is important that you are
as comfortable as possible!
Clients are encouraged to think about…
Where they would like to do their assessment (e.g., in bed, on the couch, in the garden- as long as the internet connection is strong and you have privacy!)
Who they might like to be in attendance (partners, friends, pets, family members etc., are welcome if it feels right for you).
What they might like to bring/have on hand (e.g., snacks, a cup of tea, fidget tools, safety items like a favourite stuffed toy etc., )
Minds Matter is a judgement free zone. Whatever works for you, works for us.
Nitty-gritty of assessments

You will require access to a private, safe space with a computer or iPad/tablet (or smartphone, however this can be limiting) and reliable internet connection. You are encouraged to engage in the assessment in whatever way works for you (pets, craft supplies, snacks, and pyjamas are all welcome!). Clients are sent an email with the videolink to be used for the assessment appointment and all payment is required prior to the assessment commencing.

Prior to the appointment, clients are sent a confirmation email including consent and background information forms. Clients are also sent a number of screening assessment tools that will need to be completed ahead of the assessment appointment.

Depending on the individual, we may talk to you about gathering information from someone that knew you when you were a child, someone that knows you well now, and other health professionals
note, not having access to these does not exclude you from being able to access an assessment or diagnosis- we will talk to you about your individual circumstances.

In regard to Autism Assessments, Minds Matter utilise an assessment process based off the MIGDAS-2, which is currently regarded as the most neuro-affirming tool for assessing Autism. It is strengths-based and provides a rich understanding of an individual's experience- something that other assessment methods (e.g., ADOS-2) have been criticised for lacking.

Please note, this is only the case for additional paperwork and reports beyond that included in the booked assessment type.
In addition to the clinical services and assessments mentioned, fees will also apply to other billable administrative, indirect, or non-client-facing work. This is charged at a rate of $280/hour (below the 2024-2025 AAPI recommended fee of $315/hour) and includes, but is not limited to:
Completing Applications and other Documents (e.g., Funding, Centrelink, NDIS, SEAS, university paperwork etc)
Non-direct Client Services, including Case Management and Case Coordination
